Greetings from Head of School Elect Edward Kim

February 2018
Dear Families and Friends of the St. Matthew’s Parish School Community,
It is a tremendous honor to be joining St. Matthew’s Parish School as Head of School in July of 2018. St. Matthew’s commitment to excellence and dedication to Christ-centered values to educate students to become independent thinkers and leaders who value character and service for the common good is closely aligned with my core beliefs. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to put what matters most, the education and development of children, at the center of my work and calling for the past thirty-two years. I have partnered with many families and students, ranging in age from pre-kindergarten through grade twelve, and I am excited to bring my experience and skills to this community. Creating an environment designed to inspire eager learning with high standards and safe spaces where each child confidently and boldly takes risks in order to flourish and grow is my principal purpose. I am grateful that the Board and Vestry have invited me to lead this outstanding school, and my family and I are looking forward to being a part of the next great chapter in the St. Matthew’s story.
The Search Committee’s thoughtful and diligent process allowed me to meet exceptional and passionate educators, active and dedicated parents, enthusiastic and joyful students, and a Board that stewards the School with care and commitment. Clearly, St. Matthew’s is a community that lives its mission daily. I am delighted to work at a school that embraces a balanced education, body, mind, and spirit; that values the principles in the Character Covenant; that fosters a love of learning and promotes innovative teaching, and that builds an inclusive and diverse school culture that respects each individual. St. Matthew’s is known and well-respected regionally and across the nation, no doubt due in part to the excellent leadership and vision of Stu Work and by Les Frost before him, and the critical partnership with the Reverend Bruce Freeman and the Parish of St. Matthew. I am thrilled to carry the ball forward to the next level of excellence to prepare future generations of St. Matthew’s Falcons.
In my visits to the campus, I have been impressed by the thoughtfulness and kindness of the members of this community. Everyone I have met describes St. Matthew’s as a school that intentionally fosters relationships between students, teachers, and parents. In the upcoming months, I will be contacting Board members, speaking with school administrators and reading materials from St. Matthew’s to capture the unique charm and ethos of the School and gauge the deep quality that is here. This will be an important foundational step prior to listening to members of the varied St. Matthew’s constituencies about what makes the School special, and how can we set a strategic course for her future. I look forward to meeting all of you, learning about your perspective and experiences, and embracing the energetic spirit of the School.
On a personal note, my wife, Hanne, and I are looking forward to our move to the Palisades and establishing another “home base” for our three daughters, Sofie (Princeton ’20), Helene (Dartmouth ’21) and Louise (TBD, ’23). Minnesota and New Jersey were wonderful places to raise our family, and we will have fond memories of our life in the Midwest and on the East Coast. We will certainly miss friends and family, but we cannot wait to meet new friends and embrace not only the warmth of Southern California’s weather but also the warmth of the St. Matthew’s community. I look forward to our important work together. See you soon!
