Grades 1 & 2

"Program for the Younger Set"

The Morning Program
8:45 - 11:50 a.m.
Children entering Grades 1 and 2 in the fall will participate in a program designed to prepare them for the transition into Early Elementary School.  Through games, projects, dramatic play, experiments, art, and writing, students will explore the world of award-winning literature and strengthen their problem solving and computational skills.

During third period, students activate their curiosity and critical thinking skills by choosing from one of the following offerings : "Games, Games, Games" or "Young Scientists".

Games, Games, Games
Students will spend the summer strategizing and stretching their teamwork skills as they rediscover familiar games and learn brand new games.  Students will be encouraged to bring in games that they want to teach the class and play with their friends. The rules of chess will be taught, and children will be able to play games that fit their unique style and taste.

Young Scientists

Students will become a junior scientist and explore the world around them utilizing the scientific process, hands-on activities, and cooking.  In Launchpad, St. Matthew's Lower School Maker Lab, students will develop the inventor inside of them using a variety of materials and technology.

The Afternoon Program
11:50 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

During the afternoon program, students will participate in creative activities including arts and crafts, drama, puppetry, music, and movement in a self-contained setting. There will be plenty of time for outdoor play and group games. Students will also have an opportunity to swim in the new St. Matthew's outdoor pool on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, supervised by our certified instructor, their classroom teacher, and student aides.
