Dr. Monica Gillespie » Biography


Dr. Gillespie is honored to join the St. Matthew’s Parish School community as Interim Principal for Preschool through Grade 4. An experienced educator for nearly thirty years, she is dedicated to ensuring that every child is known, valued, and loved.  

Most recently, Dr. Gillespie served for three years as Head of Upper School at Francis Parker School.  Prior to Parker, Dr. Gillespie served as Head of School at Saint Mary's School in Raleigh, North Carolina. 

She earned her bachelor's degree in English and History from the University of Virginia (where she was a member of the Women’s Varsity Soccer team), and received both her Master's in Education and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the Curry School of Education, University of Virginia. 

She began her career in independent school administration as Head of St. Luke’s Lutheran School, located in Virginia, before becoming the Head of School at Saint Paul’s School for Girls, and St. Paul’s Plus, an award-winning early childhood program, in Maryland. 

Dr. Gillespie’s commitment to Episcopal schools extended beyond her administrative roles as she has served on the National Association of Episcopal Schools Governing Board (2010-2016) and served on the Endowment Committee. She also is a member of the local Biennial Conference planning committee.
