Religion Program
The focus of the Religion program at St. Matthews is to provide the children with a foundation for a spiritual life. In the early grades the focus is on the Bible, with a special emphasis on the Old Testament in the 4th Grade, and the New Testament in the 5th Grade. As the students mature, they examine theological themes and the relationship of faith to all aspects of life and ethical decision making. Throughout the grades, the students reflect on their responsibility to serve in the community as a grateful response through class service projects to Gods love for them. In addition to weekly Religion instruction for Grades 3-7, all students attend a weekly chapel service, an age appropriate liturgy conducted by a member of the parish clergy. There are three such weekly liturgies for children: one for preschoolers; one for K-4 students; and one for those in grades 5-8. The students participate fully in the prayers and hymns; they also serve as acolytes, lectors or ushers. |

Community Service
A vital part of each child's education at St. Matthews is participation in grade level community service projects. By starting young with simple age-appropriate activities like tray favors for Meals on Wheels or campus beautification campaigns, the children develop the habit of doing something for someone else and of making significant contributions to the community. By the time students reach middle school, classes may sponsor an underprivileged family or volunteer to do service projects off campus. Every grade participates in community-based service commitment as well as school-wide service activities sponsored by S.A.L.T. Being of service to others allows students to see themselves as constructive agents of change and to act upon the empathy the school encourages and nurtures. |
