Dear Members of the St. Matthew's Community,
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Edward Kim as our next Head of School. Mr. Kim will succeed Mr. Stuart Work beginning next school year, with his work commencing on July 1, 2018.
The selection of Mr. Kim is the culmination of a rigorous search process that took almost one year and included an impressive pool of candidates. We are grateful for the dedication of the Search Committee that organized and managed the selection process. The Committee was led by Callie Momtazee and Ted Russell, with significant contributions from Committee Members John Choi, Rick Commons, Tom Diggs, Jennifer Lee, Maida Hastings, Roz Nieman, Christine Purcell, and Kristin Waters. We also appreciate the efforts of the many faculty, staff, parents, students, and parishioners who participated in the Head Search process over the past year.
Many of you had the opportunity to meet Ed and his wife Hanne during their recent visit to St. Matthew's. Ed brings a tremendous depth of experience to St. Matthew's, having spent his entire 31-year career as an educator, coach, and leader of independent schools. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1986, Ed joined Delbarton School in Morristown, NJ as a teacher and coach. From 1991 to 2007 he served as Delbarton's Assistant Head of School, the highest non-monastic leadership position in the school. During his tenure at Delbarton, Ed completed a Master's program at Columbia University Teachers College in Private School Education as a Klingenstein Fellow. From 2007-2017 Ed served as the Head of Breck School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During his ten-year headship at Breck, Ed created the Melrose Center for Servant Leadership, completed and implemented two strategic plans, and oversaw a successful ISACS accreditation. Under his leadership and thoughtful direction, Breck created the Peter Clark Center of Teaching and Learning focusing on teaching each unique student, while raising over $55 million to sustain the school's mission. Ed and Hanne have daughters currently attending Breck School, Dartmouth College, and Princeton University.
Upon accepting the new role, Ed expressed the following, “During our visit to St. Matthew’s in September, my wife Hanne and I enjoyed a warm welcome from all parts of the School and church community. The passion of the teachers and the smiles on students’ faces spoke volumes about the thriving and inspired community that is St. Matthew’s. I am excited about moving to the Pacific Palisades, and the opportunity to lead St. Matthew’s into its next chapter.”
We know that Ed will provide leadership, experience, energy, and a strong commitment to the core values of St. Matthew's. We are confident that he will be a worthy successor to Mr. Stuart Work, who has served so capably for the last seven years. Stu will continue as Head of School during this school year, while preparing us for this important transition.
Our community is blessed with many wonderful advantages and remains dedicated to educating our children to serve, lead, and flourish. This transition in School leadership will provide a further opportunity for St. Matthew's to reach new heights. Please join us in welcoming Ed and Hanne Kim to the St. Matthew's Parish community.
